Mac OS X External VGA Monitor - Blank Screen

Thought this might help someone out there on the interweb.

I have a Macbook and wanted to hook up my VGA monitor.
I already had a Mini DVI to DVI cable from Apple, so bought a DVI to VGA convertor.
This produced a blank screen on the external monitor, but the Mac thought that the screen was there.

The reason is that the Mini DVI to DVI cable only presents the DIGITAL signal to the DVI end, but VGA is ANALOG.
So it will never work.
I don't actually know whether the DVI-D to VGA convertor would ever work in any situation - it appears to be useless.

The solution is to buy the Mini DVI to VGA cable from Apple.
This works fine!
